The Binge

Hi, my name is Deborah and I am a binge watcher.

Yes, folks a binge watcher and an avid binge watcher at that. I spend countless hours everyday on Netflix watching (and/or rewatching) countless series. In the past two weeks I have watched Sense8, Misfits, The IT Crowd and started OITNB.

And guess what? I am not ashamed. I love to binge watch series consecutively and I’m proud of it. This stereotype that only the lonely and unemployed have the kind of time that allows them to spend their days on Netflix must be crushed! We binge watchers must unite and show others what greatness can come from endless hours of mindlessly watching T.V.

For example, I have found a love for sexy doctors and weird medical cases thanks to my binge of Greys Anatomy (2 and a half weeks for the whole series). Or, thanks to Misfits I have a strange desire to fight crime with a charming Irishmen, while simultaneously breaking the law.

Those of you who haven’t attempted binge watching should do so immediately, and here are some shows to get you started.

  • Friends
  • Sense8
  • Grey’s Anatomy
  • Gossip Girl
  • The 100
  • Scrubs
  • Orange is the New Black
  • Suits
  • House
  • Charmed

There are many more series out there but these are just some of my favourites. There is no shame in binging, any time spent on Netflix is time well spent, at least in my opinion.

Marianas Trench @ Nathan Philips Square.

Mike Ayley taking a bra off Josh Ramsay was just one of the highlights of an amazing show.

I mean, this was AMAZING. I saw them two years ago almost to the day and I think I like them now even more than I did then.
They’re friggin’ high energy, harmonizing, B.C boys and they are here to put on a great show.
Why was this a great show? Let me try to explain why I loved this experience.
First of all, so many people were singing along. In fact, EVERYONE around me was singing DSCN9567along. You know what a wonderful feeling it is to be singing your favourite songs at the top of your lungs and have hundreds of people around you doing the exact same thing? It just fills me with absolute joy to be enjoying a show so much and be getting that
same energy from everyone surrounding me.
And a contributing factor to the screaming of song lyrics is, of course, The Trench. Josh, Matt, Ian, and Mike are on top of their friggin’ game. Those guys do not miss a beat and have their playing down. The harmonies are always gorgeous and Josh is not afraid to hit long, high notes
Joshua Ramsay (is his full name even Joshua?) is also not afraid of going into the crowd. Not one bit. Whether it’s actually crowd surfing or just reaching out to say hey to the audience this guy was down the stage and cozing up with people.
A moment: I will tell you this being able to see Josh Ramsay’s eyes up close and in detail might just be magical. Those bright blues with teal and light green are beautiful.
Anyway.
Another reason why this was so goddamn fun was the crowd interaction. Not only was DSCN9578the lead singer with the crowd and not only was this crowd giving all their might to singing, but the band was constantly encouraging the audience to participate. Whether it was Josh getting people to sing along or Mike getting everyone to clap their hands, they kept everyone energetic and happy.
Speaking of happiness and speaking, Josh Ramsay is one helluva an entertainer. The man came out wearing a ring leader’s top hat, for christ’s sake. BUT THAT’S WHY HE’S JOSH. This guy is funny, making jokes about not being in the Pan Am games, wearing bras, and asking people to at least clean their underwear before throwing it on stage. Just fun things one says on stage while shirtless.
I think the show was so good because it has all the right elements: loads of energy, a band that loves what they do, an audience that loves the band, and a happy mood cast over all in Nathan Philips Square.

Thank you, Marianas Trench, for a concert that made me forget everything besides positive feelings and how much I love music.

Town Ballroom- Against Me! With Annie Girl and the Flight + Frnkiero and the Cellabration

THE VENUE: THE TOWN BALLROOM, DOWNTOWN BUFFALO.
Gorgeous, it has old carved roof beams and beautiful neon lights for the stage before the show started up. It also has a screen on either side of the stage that shows the bands playing.

There’s a pit in front of the stage and 2 levels where you can stand and watch which is super convenient if you can’t get up front and actually wanna see the band

THE ACTS:

1) ANNIE GIRL AND THE FLIGHT.
What great music!!!!!!!!!! I’d never heard of them before but man, they were kind of effortlessly cool without being pretentious.

Their sound was fan, heavy, hard, chill, experimental, and just all-around good. I felt like I was in Only Lovers LIMG_2992eft  Alive or some other Jim Jarmusch movie throughout their performance because it had that great cool-vibe to it.

The lights bounced off the bass player’s pegs  and looked pretty.

I was mesmerized by their sound and their thousand pedals making the guitars sound otherwordly.

2) FRNKIERO AND THE CELLABRATION
OKAY BUT WOW-IMG_3174
This is one of my favourite musicians and he just performed with everything he had. This man puts all his energy and emotion into the performance.
Oh jesus, he is gorgeous.
The people there for him were so excited. I had a bunch of girls behind me screaming like it was Beatlemania.
FrankieMania?
I even heard one person scream “my child” at him.

This man just came on and performed with all he had  for the whole set. The most of a  break he took was when he talked about how Love is the most important word and how he believes in energies and how they’re powerful. He was also saying something that I think might have been about a ghost in the venue but I’m not sure.

IMG_3219
He was great in his performance and I think everything that could be given was given to that guitar, the microphone and the crowd.
IMG_3242Singing along to my favourite songs while the artist stand in front of me is almost unbelievable and I’m still a little in shock that it actually happened and that he was actually the amazing performer I imagined him to be (and also very cute!).
Thanks for a great show, FrnkIero & the Cellabration.

3)AGAINST ME!
BEER, MOSH, FUN.
That’s what this was.
Okay, I had heard of Against Me! But I had never actually listened to them and I kept forgetting to so then it was a brand new band for me to hear!

They music is just super fun. Like, fast, loud, punk-y rock with anthem vibes and lots of lyrics to scream out.

IMG_3462
There was a mosh pit of people in the thirties wearing plaid. It was way more fun than it looked.
I mean, it was so fun that I had beer spilled on me more than once and I didn’t even mind because I was having such a great time!
What a fun set to pogo to!

The night was filled with energy, if this tour comes to your town, I wouldn’t hesitate to go!

San Cisco and MOTHXR

If you’re a hard core indie music lover (like myself), I’m sure you’re aware of San Cisco. San Cisco, for those of you who don’t know, is a kick ass Australian indie pop band. Their greatest hits? Fred Astaire and Awkward.

Nothing’s classier than songs named after dance legends and stalking incidents.

Recently, Sara and I got the amazing opportunity to see them live at Toronto’s Mod Club. With a $15 fee I couldn’t have been happier.

The concert did not disappoint. Not only were they punctual (starting the show at the time they said they were going to start) but the opening band was a welcome surprise.

Now, I didn’t do my research before the concert and so I had no idea who the opening band was. When they got on stage and I saw Penn Badgley head up to the mic I nearly had a hissy fit. Out of all people in the world that I expected to see on that stage, it’s safe to say that the Gossip Girl star was not one of them. His band MOTHXR did an exceptional job of pumping up the crowd with their indie electro pop style and wiggly dance moves.

When San Cisco hit the stage the crowd went wild. They were great and upbeat the whole time, playing all the fan favourites from the new and old album. Not only that, but when leaving the concert their adorable drummer Scarlett (gotta love a band with a female drummer) went out to greet the fans, taking care to sign and pose for all of our demands.

I really couldn’t off asked for more from this concert.
